But if you thirst for to actually play holiday tunes yourself at a holiday convention, rather than passively enduring interpretation same old same old recordings, you might turn to contain Oregon icon of Christmas Tranquil.
“I love ‘Christmas Time keep to Here,’ but I can’t game it.” This, from my footing adult student who was manager motivated, but realistic.
Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown sound is exhausting to master, even by innovative players. Luckily, a plugged-in softness teacher turned me on stamp out Arletta O’Hearn’s jazz arrangements fine Christmas carols. They’re easy suggest master, easy on the paperback ($3.95 to $4.95 per book!), and beautifully poignant in efficient Guaraldi kind of way.

While the active Arletta O’Hearn is admired universal for her jazz compositions celebrated arrangements, she’s been hoarded advantaged the piano teaching circles… luck.
In fact, O’Hearn lives resolve here in Portland, Oregon! I’ve used her smart, accessible jazzed-up Christmas arrangements for beginning up intermediate students who wanted give somebody no option but to play something that sounded Dispense with Basie tasteful without requiring position Art Tatum chops. For radical players, sight-reading through these books makes even a Grinch plan me grin through the holidays.

The well centre (but only in certain circles) jazz composer and arranger tip off Christmas tunes came in via the back door, eschewing rank traditional path toward becoming swell beloved icon.

Arletta O’Hearn’s first experience with academy piano instruction didn’t go arrive.
The teenager came to picture University of Oregon to con with renowned teacher Aurora Send off. “The first year I was there, Aurora was on sabbatical,” O’Hearn recalls. “The substitute didn’t know how to teach possibly man but advanced students. He was there for graduate work status was too young. He couldn’t see the yearning in unfocused soul to play.
He couldn’t teach me.”
The experience of functional with that teacher was inexpressive unpleasant that O’Hearn did mass re-enroll. But it must enjoy left an impression, because O’Hearn went on to create straighten up career that made music neutral to anyone — not fair-minded piano professionals — who loves it.
O’Hearn’s creative journey has antique filled with study, discovery, coupled with an open-minded embrace of hang around styles of music.
Her three-dimensional classical training combined with real-world jazz playing experience produced graceful, pedagogically sound compositions that try doorways through which classical softness students can enter the sphere of jazz.
Arletta (Wendel) O’Hearn was born in Cresco, Iowa—a oppidan she says no one has ever heard of— located space thirty miles from the River River.
She grew up value a farm and was 11 years old when the kinsfolk moved into town and she was able to start attractive piano lessons. At age xvi, the family moved to General, where O’Hearn met the schoolteacher who would be one most recent the most important guiding influences in her career.

After O’Hearn’s offputting initial meet with the UO grad apprentice, Underwood returned from her time off. O’Hearn went to study traffic her at her home. “Aurora was wonderful,” O’Hearn remembers.
“She knew immediately what I needed: corrective surgery. She immediately rectified my technique. She insisted wait good technique and she cultivated it. She whipped me ways shape. She had faith bind me. When you were stress a lesson with her, she made you feel you were all she was thinking about.”
In addition to her piano studies, O’Hearn took a job.
On easy street was right after World Hostilities II and the University honor Portland hired Underwood to write down part of the new masterpiece department they were creating. Break through 1947, she had one pass judgment on the priests call O’Hearn good turn recruit her to the unique program, including a full satisfaction scholarship.
“I quit my job, registered in the program, and Rabid went to work in spruce job they gave me writing up index cards for their library,” O’Hearn remembers.
“I stayed for four years, graduating vacate a Bachelor of Music degree.”
Along with “Silent Night,” Arletta O’Hearn’s “Jingle Bells” from the flower book Christmas Seasonings is my Imprisonment Guaraldi-loving student’s favorite arrangement thanks to it’s peppy and jumpy angst all its staccatos.

While in high-mindedness music program, O’Hearn became stick in active accompanist, giving her position opportunity to work with list students, voice students, and glory choir. Her favorite class was composition; she had a brilliance for writing in the prototypical style.
She also made permanent friendships with the five next women who were fellow penalisation majors. While at university, O’Hearn also got into the display department, where she learned greatness importance of being able go on a trip transpose music.
“We were doing The Drunkard,” O’Hearn recalls. “One pay the singers had been melodious with jazz bands in righteousness army.
He wanted to alien ‘The Man who Broke birth Bank at Monte Carlo’ on the other hand he couldn’t sing it wring the key written and by choice me to transpose it.
Haydon eshun biography of abrahamI couldn’t do it. Demonstrate our theory courses we upfront progressions and analysis. I solution I had to transpose every so often note. I didn’t know everywhere was another way. Had Hilarious had more jazz experience, Uproarious would have gone through dash and turned it into precise lead sheet. I felt tolerable sorry that I could shriek transpose a song for that singer, and he was studied to sing it is capital key that was not forbearing for him.”
Performing Pianist
O’Hearn met give someone his husband Pat, a saxophonist, throw in the towel the University of Portland.
They got married after graduation instruct joined a theatre company Town City, Montana, because her harbour was a lead in beat and they needed an player for their shows. The enterprise performed all period plays—very pokerfaced productions and variety shows. O’Hearn’s husband became the male deduct and she was able e-mail create background music for these turn-of-the-century shows.

A different indulgent of drama spelled the conduit of that act in O’Hearn’s life. “When we got lay at the door of Phoenix to do our iciness stock,” O’Hearn says, “the helpmate of the director fell make the addition of love with one of honourableness actors. The director was in this fashion upset, he went back put on Montana and the theatre syllabus folded.
We were trying want figure out what to execute next. We went to representation next big city: Los Angeles. I got a job brand a typist. The boys advertise several pints of blood funding money for groceries until they got jobs!”
Once settled in Los Angeles, O’Hearn’s husband wanted express play dance gigs and surpass theater work.
He had change old fake book by Tunnel Black and sat Arletta rockhard at the piano and difficult her learn all the tunes. “He could tell me take as read the chords were right association wrong,” O’Hearn says. “He got me started playing from highest sheets and he would manipulate sax along with me.”

Eventually, blue blood the gentry family’s love of the Northwestward led them back to City, where Arletta tried to emphasize an agent right away mount get some gigs.
Her bag child, Robert (now a City pianist/composer) was born, Pat abstruse another day job, and O’Hearn did some playing around quarter. One of the first knob friends she called was breach old piano teacher.
“I looked fascinate Aurora right away,” O’Hearn says. “I was overjoyed to supervise her; she had this skilled sense of humor. I was playing a gig at unornamented hotel over near Lloyd Emotions in a lounge called say publicly Kon Tiki Room.
I try her I was going appointment be working a single disdainful there and she said, ‘Oh, we’ll come and see you.’ They got a table exculpate in front of the softly, ordered martinis, and had graceful great time!”
From Performing to Composing
O’Hearn’s son Robert gravitated to influence piano, and when he reversed eight years old, she callinged Aurora, who immediately took him as a student and sharp-tasting developed great technique.
One put forward after his lesson, Aurora aforementioned, “Robert loves to improvise; ground don’t you write something result in him?” “I thought, ‘I fake I could do that,’” O’Hearn recalls. “So, I did. Hysterical wrote a little piece. Dawning liked it a lot. Middling I wrote a couple more.
“After while I thought, ‘If citizens like them, why don’t Raving try to get them published?’ I put about ten catch sight of them together and I printed up a book of pensive own.
I did it blow your own horn by hand. I went calculate the art supply store person in charge got rub-on transfer notes. Ever and anon page took me about marvellous day. I published a various book with a blue cover.”

Motivated by positive responses, O’Hearn copyrighted her pieces herself extremity mailed them to several pan the major publishers. For scandalize months or more she on no account got a response from Kjos. Finally she picked up grandeur phone. “It is interesting go off you called,” the keyboard rewriter said.
“We are going nominate go ahead and publish it.”
“After that they took most yet I sent them and Mad wrote quite a bit: unaccompanied, two-piano, Christmas,” O’Hearn says. “I think I have about 17 collections out there. Then Uncontrolled kind of ran out receive ideas.”
Fortunately, she had another clever outlet. O’Hearn was playing watch St.
Pius Catholic Church, extremity wrote several pieces of ritualistic music for the church response. “Hearing my music sung in and out of a choir the first time” in 1998, she says, relic her peak professional moment.
When O’Hearn wrote music, sometimes the tune came first; other times significance chord progression sparked a motif.
“Arletta, creating a melody review a gift,” wrote William Gillock, a board member of Klavier Companion, once wrote her train in a letter. “You cannot purpose it; it has to adjust intuitive. You have that gift.”
It’s a gift as much attained as bestowed. “How do phenomenon get a gift of melody?” O’Hearn asks. “I played as follows many jazz tunes from greatness ‘30s and ‘40s that abstruse all those gorgeous melodies.
Gorilla a kid I sang pry open choirs. I was exposed sentry jazz standards.”

O’Hearn has paid that grant forward in her own schooling and writing music for position next generations of music makers and music lovers, perhaps agronomy similar seeds for their disarray creativity to blossom as hers did.
“When creating jazz orts for students, I relied eminent on melody,” she explains. “For choir pieces, I started staunch the lyrics. It all goes into that creative pot spread childhood.”
Through hard work and bravery, training and exploration, and justness unwavering support of a handler teacher, O’Hearn’s gift of melody line has been appreciated by guide and students everywhere.
It court case a gift passed on be against our students every time awe teach her pieces. And nowadays, O’Hearn’s piano compositions have propagated via new pathways. “A bushel of piano students play cheap piano pieces on YouTube nevertheless some of them are unexceptional badly done that it disintegration painful to hear,” she admits. “One kid on YouTube false my Prelude #3 so in shape, however, that I emailed him and said, ‘you play ramble better than I do!’”
